In Year 1 we aim to make the transition from early years as smooth as possible and we continue to develop the building blocks required for a successful education. We encourage the children to become independent learners, responsible and organised for their own learning. Children participate in engaging and challenging lessons in order for them to achieve their full potential.
At Park View Academy, reading is an essential part of our curriculum and we try to instil a love of reading in all of our children. Children participate in a daily ‘love of reading’ session as well as visiting our school library once per week. In addition to this, children read with another adult in school.
As a school we follow Read, Write, Inc phonics scheme and provide books at the appropriate level to ensure progress for all children. It is vital you read with your child each night and record this in your child’s planner. It is expected that the children read at least three times a week. In June, all children in Year One take part in the Government’s phonics screening assessment. In this assessment the children will read familiar and nonsense (alien) words.
Our English curriculum is based on high quality texts and children will read and write a variety of genres including fiction and non- fiction. In Maths children will deepen their understanding by developing their practical skills in addition to developing reasoning and problem-solving skills.
Some of our foundation topics include; animals including humans, seasons, our local area, online safety and old and new toys.
After school activities are offered to all children each half term to enrich our curriculum and improve well- being for our children.
There will be English, Maths, Spelling and number bonds homework provided each Monday which should be returned by Friday. Your child will receive 4 spellings per week and they will be tested every Friday. You can check how well your child is doing by looking at their planner each week.
